Red Faction: Guerrilla - REVIEW

Explosive, that’s the word to describe this game. Never before have we seen such massive and detailed destruction.

The third entry in the Red Faction franchise is setting new standards. First of all, it’s a third person shooter game, unlike the first 2 which were first person shooters. In this game you will find out that shooting enemies is just secondary. Buildings destruction is the thing of the day.

Red Faction 3: Guerilla - Watch more free videos

MARS. Mars is the action setting; A superbly depicted planet with excellent habitat depiction and believable futuristic vehicles. This is an open-world game. You can freeroam in the massive world and find missions to accomplish. It is a believable world, with futuristic architecture and technology. The story won’t impress you in any way. It is the standard go there for one reason and become hero by mistake story. What you should remember that the bad guys EDF control Mars and you join the rebellion called Red Faction.

Now to the serious part. Like I said before, the game is about total mayhem and destruction. So, most of the time your best friend will be a sledgehammer. WTF? Yes a sledgehammer. This is not an ordinary sledgehammer, this tool is a monster. You can destroy everything with it – buildings, cars, people, rocks – if you manage to get close to your target. The developers spent some time perfecting the destruction system. Every destruction is in rendered in real time, which means you will never get tired of seeing structure falling down in everyway possible, never twice the same. The details are spectacular. Lots and lots of debrief and you can see the gravity force pulling down the structures, when their resistance elements are affected. Majestic view.

I really mean it, this kind of destruction I never dreamed it could be possible. It is that good.

Everything in the game can be acquired or upgraded with salvage, the Mars money. You can obtain salvage by inflicting damage to just about anything. Of course, besides destroying buildings, you have different type of missions. We can not forget that this is a shooter. You have lots of weapons at your disposal, from the elementary assault rifle to sophisticated equipment like nano rifles, thermobarick rockets, thrusters, pulse weapon and the out of this world singularity bomb. This bomb will really impress you; it creates a void which sucks everything in it; the view is awesome.

Something really strange in this game is the cover system. Yes, you actually have a cover system by pressing twice a button you will enter cover to just about anything in this world. I find it strange because the cover is very temporary, it can be destructed in a blink of an eye and the game can be played perfectly without it. But still, this system exists and functions well, so congratulation, this works too.

Enemies are pretty smart. They will try to evade, to cover or to flank you. They will use fixed machine guns or vehicles to hit you.

Yes, you can use vehicles. Lots and lots of vehicle types with great futuristic design and weapons. Big vehicles are very important in destruction mission because you can flatout entire neighborhoods with one monster of a vehicle. You can also find and use gigantic construction robots with weapons or immense destruction capabilities.

There are lots of missions type, which can get repetitive after a wile, but the mayhem and destruction keeps your blood flowing constantly.

The second part of this game is the Multiplayer. It is a deep experience, with different mods, from deathmatch to objective based missions, and lots of unlockables. Up to 16 can play online, which is not much, but it is enough to level down everything in one map. The maps are relatively small, but full of structures that can be destroyed; their design is affected constantly by destruction and this makes a very nice experience in multiplayer. The multiplayer itself is nothing innovative but the destruction system ensures you never felt this way. There lots of gadgets, called backpacks, that you do not encounter in single player campaign that make a delight in multiplayer like: rhino which enables you to speed up instantly and demolish everything in front of you or thruster packs or healing and stealth packs. Very well designed and after you get the hang of it, they all work wonderfully.

There is also a multiplayer component that allows you to play offline. You must inflict as much destruction as possible and then pass the controller to your friend and pray he doesn't make more points. Fun enough.

This game it’s something you do not encounter often. The destructions, mayhem and demolishing available is unprecedented. It gets the other things right too; like the shooting and driving parts. It is a impressive world you will hardly want to escape from. You must play this game, so do not waste anymore time.

Killzone 2 DLC “Napalm & Cordite” REVIEW

Everybody knows by now about Killzone 2. The developers show much appreciated efforts to satisfy the gamers and constantly add patches and maps.

The latest DLC content is “Napalm & Cordide”. This pack adds two new maps and also, for the first time, two new weapons.

“Seljeva Cliffside” is the fir tone, a relatively small map, with great design, and plenty of alternative routes. The look of this map is amazing as usual. The map resembles “Pyrhuss Rise” but on a smaller scale. Suljeva Cliffside would be a great map for 8vs8. On this map you can find the newly added flamethrower. Important to know that you cannot equip the new weapons from the character selection menu, like the other weapons. The flamethrower can be found in spawn points along the map. Only one flamethrower at one specific moment can be found. As expected the flamethrower features devastating damage and large coverage; multikills are of course often happening.

The second map si “Arctower Landing”. You can revisit here the Arctower defense posts of Blood Meridian. It is also smaller in size compared with others. I mostly like about this map the maze feel and that is full of ins and outs, so it isn't easy to camp and someone is always sneaking up on someone else. Here you can find the famous bolt gun. It is a one hit / one kill weapon. The maximum ammo is 20. The bolts disappear after firing so you cannot create ladders to limb on them for example.

Let’s hope those maps will be more played that the other maps added, some of them being already forgotten. The new weapons are cool, but are very hard to get (you need great deal of luck to get them, they do not respawn consecutively in the same spot), are very powerful, but somehow they create too much of a chaos in the game. Either you love them or hate them.

Of course, 8 trophies have been added for maximum pleasure. Good job Guerrilla!

MOTORSTORM 2 - PACIFIC RIFT - REVIEW

MotorStorm 2 - Pacific Rift wants to improve and raise the standard imposed by its predecessor and … it is successful. The game is an brutal off-road racing arcade simulator with deformable tracks and an increased freedom of movement through the placement of multiple routes. The brutality is implemented through a fun system for adversaries attack.

The action is located on an island long ago deserted by man, left to wilderness. The perfect setting for explosive racing on the 4 types of tracks grouped around 4 elements: earth, fire, air and water. This time around the routes are more diversified compared to its predecessor. There are 16 routes, 4 for each item, each having a formidable design, starting with landscape and the color palette and ending with alternative routes, obstacles and deformable terrain. There are different types of racing from classic race continued with speed and eliminator. The multiplayer is great also.

The first important element of racing is the gameplay. Motorstorm 2 excels at this offering superb vehicle handling. Multiple classes of vehicles are at your disposal, from motorcycles to the new appearance - monstertrucks, though a greater variety or differentiation of handling between the cars of the same class would have been welcome. Each class has a distinct feeling, smaller vehicles particular benefit from a better handling and more powerful acceleration. Monstertruck's are a unique addition, and they are fast and maneuverable, online’s community favorites.

The boosting system returns from the first Motorstorm with two important improvements. Water and fire influence the duration of the boosting action, water cools the engine extending the boost, whereas the fire heats it; explosions are inevitable.

The second important element of brutal off-road racing is the possibility of eliminating opponents by direct attacks (punches, kicks, smash with the vehic
le) or indirect (destruction of the towers, trees, barriers and other obstacles). By pressing L1-R1 keys you can attack your opponent with punches or sudden changes of direction.

The third element that excels in Motorstorm are the alternative routes. All classes of vehicles can benefit by choosing an optimal route. For example, the motorcycle prefers flat terrain, without water and other obstacles, with many platforms. In th
e other extreme are large machines like the Muddplungers or Trucks who love the mud, water obstacles and ... distruction. The Monstertruck is most original, it can climb any obstacle and has strong throttle. To facilitate choice of optimal game route, the routes for small vehicles are located in low rise or high terrain, while the trucks are intended for those who descend, or at the foot of hills or rivers. There are a few obstacles that can be passed only by one vehicle type: for example stairs can be climbed only by monstertrucks and under the crashed trees only the motorcycles may pass.

The last, but not least, factor that increases the pleasure of playing is the multiplayer: split screen and online. Here you see the greatest attention paid by the developers, surpassing its predecessor. Split-screen can be played with up to 4 players on same console, while 16 players online make chaos on every track. The connection is made quickly and without interruptions. Players are in full and all just waiting to destroy your car. Interestingly, not very often the best drivers win, but the ones who explore the brutality of the game.

Graphics and sound are superb. Track details and design are a delight. There is also a function of instant photo in a single-action player; a very well implemented instrument. The sound will break your ears: either the noise from the pistons, or from the destruction or from the soundtrack. The game soundtrack can make even Guitar Hero: World Tour to flush. Rock and Heavy Metal beg for destruction.

Several weaknesses deserve to be mentioned, none of which will seriously harm the FUN FACTOR: reduced vehicle variety, lack of vehicle customization, to few innovations from the previous Motorstorm, rather short singleplayer, damage can become frustrating.

MotorStorm 2 will impress you. Everything it does, it does very well. Together with some friends the pleasure is guaranteed. There is still no worthy competitor. You want engines? Mud? Destruction? and Music? then take this game.

It’s a MUST MUST MUST!
